– ‘Lady Admiral’, the multi-media installation, is the first result of the social sculpture ‘CERITA CERITA Nona Banda’ which means in English ‘Stories Women Banda’. The Banda Archipelago has an extraordinary history with a lot of hidden stories. In this history and these stories, women are quit invisible.
‘Lady Admiral’, instalasi multi-media, adalah hasil pertama dari patung sosial ‘CERITA CERITA Nona Banda’ yang dalam bahasa Inggris berarti ‘Cerita Wanita Banda’. Kepulauan Banda memiliki sejarah yang luar biasa dengan banyak cerita tersembunyi. Dalam sejarah ini dan kisah-kisah ini, wanita tidak lagi terlihat.
This social sculpture aims to discover and research these stories together with a group of young women, students of Hatta-Sjahrir College, Banda Naira (IND). By researching, sharing, doing and having online conversations together, we have explored possibilities for visualise our findings into a multimedia artwork that reflects on cultural heritage and women from the past and today.The qualities every individual participant has are leading in the development of the artwork. This method of working is defined as ‘social sculpture’.
Patung sosial ini bertujuan untuk menemukan dan meneliti kisah-kisah tersebut bersama sekelompok remaja putri, mahasiswa Universitas Hatta-Sjahrir, Banda Naira (IND). Dengan meneliti, berbagi, melakukan, dan melakukan percakapan online bersama, kami telah mengeksplorasi kemungkinan untuk memvisualisasikan temuan kami ke dalam karya seni multimedia yang mencerminkan warisan budaya dan wanita dari masa lalu dan hari ini. Kualitas yang dimiliki setiap peserta memimpin dalam pengembangan karya seni. Metode kerja ini didefinisikan sebagai ‘patung sosial’.
We investigated the story of Bhoy Kherang, A young female fighter from Banda Naira. She was mentioned by Des Alwi (2006) in his book History of Banda Naira as the daughter of King Lautaka who was involved in several battles in Naira and was killed in battle against the Dutch in 1609 when Admiral Verhoeven was also killed. All the men of Banda were involved in the war at Selamon during the first landing of the troops of Jan Pieterszoon Coen. Bhoy Kherang took the role of her father and led the ‘Mothers Army’ from Lautaka. She was involved in fighting the mass mobilization of women in Lautaka against the VOC after the genocide in 1621. The importance of Bhoy Kherang was so important that the VOC called her Lady Admiral or Admiral of the Banda Navy. However, the story of this brave woman is hardly known. Her heroism was enshrined in one of the “Rituals of the Banda Belang Boat” through the “somba” movement, a tribute to her grave which is now on the hill of Lautaka.
Kami menyelidiki kisah Bhoy Kherang, Seorang pejuang wanita muda dari Banda Naira. Disebutkan oleh Des Alwi (2006) dalam bukunya History of Banda Naira sebagai putri Raja Lautaka yang terlibat dalam beberapa pertempuran di Naira dan tewas dalam pertempuran melawan Belanda pada tahun 1609 ketika Laksamana Verhoeven juga tewas. – ‘Lady Admiral of Banda’ is a song and one of the results of our investigation, written and conducted by Soraya Rahmad, Hanatia Puasa, Dianty Abidin, Ade Tasya Telehala, Megawati Abidin, Juul Sadée, Muhammad Farid and Reza Enem.
‘Lady Admiral of Banda’ adalah lagu dan salah satu hasil investigasi kami, yang ditulis dan dibawakan oleh Soraya Rahmad, Hanatia Puasa, Dianty Abidin, Ade Tasya Telehala, Megawati Abidin, Juul Sadée, Muhammad Farid dan Reza Enem.
– This song is part of the multi-media installation ‘Lady Admiral’ premiering at Riwanua, social cultural artspace, Makassar (IND). The exhibition was made possible by the Mondriaan Fund, the public fund for visual arts and cultural heritage, the Netherlands.
Lagu ini merupakan bagian dari instalasi multi media ‘Lady Admiral’ yang tayang perdana di Riwanua, ruang seni sosial budaya, Makassar (IND). Pameran ini terselenggara berkat Mondriaan Fund, dana publik untuk seni visual dan warisan budaya, Belanda.




– ‘Lady Admiral’, is a site-specific artwork created for Riwanua.
Entering the room you see long bamboo sticks laying on the floor and leaning against the walls. Red cotton is wrapped around their top. In the middle on the floor, there is a big heap of black sand and half above this, free hanging in space between the sticks you see a photo of five young women. The women wear Adat costumes and several Adat objects are laying next to them on the rocks. The group stands on the shore of uninhabited Karaka Island. The women have a troubled look, they stand waiting and stare into the distance. The eyes of two of them confront the public, what’s happening? This Island, a big rock, has been called Women island in the past and lays opposite of Lautaka on Banda Naira. If you put on the headphones you will hear the song. A simple gambalan sound can be heard from the other room.
The artwork reflects on the story of Bhoy Kherang, traditions, culture, the geography, rituals and on there where several stories come together in the events between the year 1609 and 1621.
– ‘Lady Admiral’, adalah karya seni khusus situs yang dibuat untuk Riwanua. Memasuki ruangan Anda melihat batang bambu panjang tergeletak di lantai dan bersandar di dinding. Kapas merah melilit bagian atasnya. Di tengah lantai, ada tumpukan besar pasir hitam dan setengahnya di atasnya, tergantung bebas di ruang antara tongkat Anda melihat foto lima wanita muda. – ‘Lady Admiral’ research and documentation is presented in the small room.
On the monitor you see the video documentation of the journey to and the photo shoot at Karaka Island and another big photo from the girls on the island, both made by Fahrist Daud, student Hatta-Sjahrir Banda Naira. Here the girls are sitting on the rocks, looking into the distance peacefully, holding their Adat objects in their lap.
On the wall there is the essay about ‘Lady Admiral’, written by Muhammad Farid and Juul Sadée. This essay shows the rich historicity of Banda. It is about parallel realities; stories told, researched and written from different perspectives such as location, origin, religion, culture, moment in time, and what benefits the narrator/writer or the listener.

Di monitor terlihat video dokumentasi perjalanan dan pemotretan di Pulau Karaka dan foto besar lainnya dari gadis-gadis di pulau itu, keduanya dibuat oleh Fahrist Daud, mahasiswa Hatta-Sjahrir Banda Naira.
Di dinding ada esai tentang ‘Lady Admiral’, yang ditulis oleh Muhammad Farid dan Juul Sadée. Esai ini menunjukkan kekayaan sejarah Banda. Ini tentang realitas paralel; cerita yang diceritakan, diteliti dan ditulis dari berbagai perspektif seperti lokasi, asal usul, agama, budaya, momen dalam waktu, dan apa manfaat narator/penulis atau pendengarnya.
